Have a vector object you'd like to see in 3-D? Just grab it and choose to Extrude from the Effects menu, and you've got a 3-D object in no time. On top of that, the image editing tools of Canvas can be incorporated directly into the illustration. In that respect, the plurality of Canvas is inviting and the tools are abundant. Vector and painting tools seem full-featured and useful, which is a nice touch, especially considering that few programs - ClarisWorks comes to mind - allow you to use both on the same document. Likewise, in publications it seems you're limited to column guides that can show you columns on the page, when it would be nice to divide individual text-frames into more than one column. For instance, I couldn't add columns to a text box that I created in a document that Canvas classifies as an illustration, even though I can easily create columns in 'publication' mode. Choose wisely, however, because once you choose, you're stuck with certain behaviors.Ĭertain tools seem to only be available in certain types of documents. With each choice, the possible templates change to help you create your chosen masterpiece. When starting a new document in Canvas you're asked to choose whether or not you'll be creating an illustration, a publication or a presentation. While I'm confident that many users will swear by the multi-faceted abilities of Canvas 5, others still will agree with me - those other applications are too powerful to give up. In fact, you could conceivably replace Photoshop, PageMaker, Quark, Persuasion and Illustrator, all with this one program, especially if you're not pushing those more specialized programs to their limits. However, Canvas does offer sophisticated tools for bezier curved text, quick 3D rendering and tear-off palettes for a multitude of tools. Unfortunately, like many jack of all trades, Canvas tends to be a master of none. This program is almost impossible to classify, with tools for drawing, painting, image editing and desktop layout. If you wanted to learn just one computer program for nearly every conceivable graphical task you can perform on your Mac, Deneba Canvas 5.0 might just fit the bill. Illustrators and image editors may find the 'document-centric' approach more limiting than pixel-oriented programs like Photoshop. Some controls for illustration and editing seem less than intuitive. Image editing tools barely rival Photostyler, much less Photoshop. Extras like 3-D, curved text and other effects make it worth playing with. Good support for the desktop publishing aficionado, with adequate image editing tools and even better illustration options. Of course, you can't please all the designers all the time, no matter how hard you try.
